Seminar: Sustainability for Structural Engineers

Sustainability is not only about addressing climate change, water shortage, energy, transport or any other single issue. It’s about solving these challenges using an integrated approach from strategy development to technical consulting to project implementation
– Lee McIntire, Chairman and CEO, CH2M HILL.

The building industry is second to food production in the consumption of raw materials in the world today. As structural engineers, we need to be aware the impacts that our decisions have on the environment around us. In respect of this, the Republic of Ireland Branch will hold a one-day seminar entitled Sustainability for Structural Engineers on Wednesday, 14 September in Dublin Institute of Technology, Bolton Street.

This seminar will examine the impacts of existing legislation on the Structural Engineer and how the existing building assessment tools assess sustainability. The assessment of embodied energy and carbon, what it means and how to calculate it will be reviewed for specific materials. As we become more focused on re-use of materials, the refurbishment of buildings and how we introduce sustainability measures into existing structures is a challenge which needs to be addressed. Finally, this seminar will cover some case studies of existing buildings incorporating the principles of sustainability and sustainable design that will be outlined throughout the course of this seminar.

This seminar is open to non-members and will be of immense benefit to any member of the construction industry. We would like to encourage members to pass this notice to friends or colleagues who may be interested in this subject matter.
