This Is The Future Of Masonry (No. 8 Nov-99)

In the delightful surroundings of The Court Hotel, Killiney Bay, forty delegates were treated to an informative presentation by five experts in the field of masonry construction on Tuesday 12th October 1999. The occasion was a one-day seminar entitled “This is the Future of Masonry” organised by this Branch to present the current trends in Masonry Construction.

The speakers were Peter Watt of the Brick Development Association, Domhnall Blair of Cement Roadstone, Paul Rogatzki of Hanson Brick Europe, Bryn Byrd a Consulting Engineer and David Cox of W.S.Atkins Consultants Ltd. They presented papers covering brick and block work as structural materials, the ancillary aspects of Masonry, developments since Roman times to the post-tensioned structures of today and into the future. A full range of structures was covered including several building types, retaining walls and masonry bridges. The presentations were based upon a similar event held in the United Kingdom as Structural Masonry Towards 2000. There were several lively discussion sessions that were unfortunately cut short due to the pressure of time.

The writer believes that the delegates left with an interest in testing the material as a viable option in the development of schemes for future projects. Printed and bound copies of the papers are available to purchase from 51 Northumberland Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
