New Professor At University College Dublin (No. 5 Apr-98)

Dr Eugene OBrien

The editor of this newsletter, Dr Eugene O’Brien, has been selected to be the next professor of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin. He is taking up the position on 1st July after 8 years as a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin. He is a native of Co. Roscommon and did Bachelors and Masters degrees at University College Galway. Following completion of a Ph.D. at the University of Calgary in Canada, he spent a number of years with firms of consulting engineers in Dublin and as a director of Tower Software. During this period he earned his reputation as a bridge designer working on many bridges in Ireland and the UK. Read the rest of this entry »

New Irish Standard for Timber Design (No. 6 Nov-98)

The new Irish standard for timber design should be available this month. It will replace SR11 and bridges the gap from the current information until the release of Eurocode 5 for timber.

The strength classes are those now being harmonised throughout Europe using C references. In Ireland C14, C16 and C18 are likely to be the most common grades in use. The ‘C’ signifies coniferous wood and the number reflects the characteristic bending strength of the timber. Read the rest of this entry »

James Daly Memorial Lecture – Pont de Normandie (No. 5 Apr-98)

This year’s James Daly Memorial Lecture was delivered by the eminent French engineer and designer of the Normandie Bridge, Dr. Michel Virlogeux, in the Burke Theatre, Trinity College. When opened in 1995, the Pont de Normandie Bridge was the longest cable stayed bridge structure in the world, at 856m. It currently retains that position, although the Tatar Bridge in Japan, with a span of 890m, will surpass the span of Normandie when it opens later this year.

Southern Cross Route Motorway, Dublin (No. 6 Nov-98)

The contract to construct the first section of the Southern Cross Motorway commenced in April 1998 with Ascon as the Contractors. This phase of the project will bring the M50 from Tallaght to near Ticknock, south of Dundrum. The motorway will be 7.2 km long and has 19 significant structures as well as considerable lengths of retaining wall and a river diversion. The bridge designs fall into a variety of categories. Dublin Airport Phase 1- Pier C (No. 6 Nov-98)

Phase 1 of the New Passenger and Baggage Handling facilities at Dublin Airport has now been completed. This prestigious project consists of an extension to the existing terminal building for expanded baggage handling facilities, a new airside shopping mall with ancillary offices and construction of Phase 1 of the new passenger Pier designated as Pier C.
